What to See & How to Travel - Underground - Map of the Electric Railways of London
Cartographer:
Gill, Leslie MacDonald, "Max"
Date of Creation:
1921
The first edition of Gill’s ground-breaking and influential folding pocket map of the London Underground, drawn by him in 1920 and published the following year. His design was used for a short period between 1920 and 1924 and ran to four editions. Gill’s distinctive style, reminiscent of this magnificent “Wonderground Map of London” of 1914, is evident in his use of a decorative border, calligraphy for the names of the stations and other text, however the overall effect is one of modern simplicity. Edward Johnston’s typeface is retained, and the individual lines are represented by the colours they now bear.
