Stratford-Upon-Avon (British Isles)
Cartographer:
Lee, Kerry Ernest
Date of Creation:
1948
Scarce twentieth century pictorial map of Stratford-upon-Avon, the ancestral home of William Shakespeare, surrounded by a broad border of vignettes illustrating scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, a portrait of the Bard himself, and numerous quotations, the artist appears in the lower right-hand corner of the map with his constant and faithful canine companion, Jim.
Lee was a renowned and much loved illustrator and poster-designer, particularly for British Rail (LMR and ER), and for his iconic maps of British cities emerging from the turmoil of WWII.
