Treasure Island viewed from the Mainland
Cartographer:
DeFoy, Francis R.
Date of Creation:
1938
DeFoy's map of Treasure Island map in San Francisco Bay, showing Oakland, San Francisco, the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, opened in 1936, and the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937, and Treasure Island, where the 1939 Exposition would be held.
DeFoy drew a number of maps of the San Francisco Bay area in advance of the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939 - 1940. Some of the maps were commissioned by the Sunset Press, for whom DeFoy worked during the 1930s, and others for local businesses, including this map for the Davidson & Light Jewelry Company. He created another for the Bank of America, and a third for the back of the menu for 'The Golden Pheasant' restaurant.
This map highlights the newly constructed bridges in the Bay area, which were central to the World’s Fair held on Treasure Island in 1939-1940: an artificial island purpose built for the Fair between 1936 and 1937.
