"Every Golf Course Shown on this map is reached by a paved boulevard"
This early map shows the main roads of southern California, most towns and other areas of interest, but particularly the location of 32 extant golf courses from Santa Barbara to San Diego, there is a 'Southern California Golf Course Index' and a 'Mileage Diagram' to complete the guide.
Published during the Golden Age of golf in Southern California. The map was first advertised for sale in July of 1921, this example was issued after 1923 when the Automobile Club of Southern California moved to the corner of Figueroa Street and Adams Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles, but not very long after as the Mountain Meadows Country Club of Pomona is listed as the most recent gold club and it was established in 1921.
The Southern California Golf Association was founded in 1899 with five clubs: Los Angeles, Pasadena, Redlands, Riverside Polo & Golf and Santa Monica. The 1920s stand out as the first "Golden Age" of golf course architecture and construction in Southern California, with the sport growing from 18 clubs with 1,371 members in 1919, to 45 associated clubs in 1925 with approximately 20,000 members. “Not all of these clubs survived the Great Depression of the 1930s or the wrecking ball as developers sought land on which to build more homes and business in succeeding decades. Nonetheless, many of the clubs built in the 1920s remain today as landmarks in golf course design” (SCGA online).
